Archit Dhingra

Recently established by architect Archit Dhingra, Arch Studio – Architecture & Interiors, is quickly becoming recognised for its sculptural homes – whether in the form of a farmhouse in the Victorian township of Gisborne or a large new family home in a bayside suburb of Melbourne. And while these distinctive homes attract those passing by, the basis for any design, be it a new home or alterations and additions, is from the inside out.

For Archit, it’s this understanding of interiors and how people live that initiates any new conversation with clients. While some architects see a house just in terms of the scale or dimensions of a room. Archit sees further into how the room will be furnished. If it’s a study or home office, it’s not just where a desk will be placed, but as importantly, establishing the light source that will provide the greatest pleasure from using this room or space.

Archit, who graduated in architecture from the University of Melbourne in 2016, has always had a talent for drawing and sketching. His fist inkling of wanting to be an architect was at primary school where he saw a plinth acknowledging the architect who designed the building in which he learned. But it was the benefit of working in a large commercial office followed by a couple of years at b.e architecture, that wetted his appetite for going alone. And during the COVID-19 years, when he put his skills into renovating his family’s home, he cemented his desire to establish his own practice. While the renovation of the family home was understandably a labour of love, other projects have since have been through clients appreciative not only of an extremely high level of design, but as importantly, grateful for the one-on-one service the practice delivers.

For Archit, the design is initiated by understanding how a client lives, from the moment they rise in the morning to the way they unwind at the end of each day. He enjoys getting involved in every stage of a design and prefers to discuss, and later present, schemes in their home rather than around a more clinical boardroom setting. And while 9am to 5pm is normally given as the designated work times for an office, even an architect’s, Archit prefers to make himself available at any time of the day – someone who is there from the start to the time of completion, when the keys to a home are handed over. Now with a portfolio that include a combination of new homes and those requiring renovation, Arch Studio continues to elevate the art of living, seeing how a well-designed space goes beyond the prosaic to create environments that bring pleasure into people’s lives
