Steffen Welsch is the Director and Principal of Steffen Welsch Architects, an award-winning Melbourne-based practice best known for creating affordable buildings with a strong focus on sustainable and climate-positive design. The firm specialises in residential, educational, and community projects.

Growing up in former East Germany, Steffen wanted to study zoology and came to architecture from left field. He studied at the former Bauhaus, worked in Vienna, and later migrated to Australia. His broad interests, rigorous education, and diverse work experience across continents continue to inform his thoughtful and context-sensitive designs.

When asked about his style, he likes to quote Austrian architect Hermann Czech: “Architecture is background, and a building should only speak when it is spoken to.”

Steffen understands, construction is only one part of our environment. The most successful projects are those that respond to their social, cultural, economic, and natural context. Since setting up his studio in 2003, Steffen’s team has built a reputation for creating highly customised, energy-efficient and environmentally sensitive designs that remain cost-effective.

His strength lies in translating complex sustainability principles into elegant, practical, and accessible architecture. He’s adaptable, able to prioritise, and known for making things happen.
